HMRC – Personal Tax Accounts

Pay as You Earn (PAYE) is changing so that more people pay the right amount of tax on their income at the right time.

Her Majestys Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have around 41 million PAYE customers. For this group of people the tax they owe is deducted from their income by their employer.

Until now, if your income changed, you often had to wait until the end of the tax year before you found out if you were due a refund or needed to pay any extra tax. From the end of May 2017 HMRC will use real time information collected monthly from employers along with any changes you make using your Personal Tax Account to determine your tax code (your tax code tells your employer how much tax you need to pay).

What are the benefits? – These changes mean you are more likely to pay the right amount of tax on your income as you earn it. The new system will offer far more certainty and help to avoid you either receiving unexpected tax bills or paying too much tax.

What do you need to do? – Most people have no action to take. Your pay and tax will continue as normal. However,if your circumstances change you will receive a tax code notice explaining the change and what to do next.

If HMRC make an adjustment to your tax code and you are unsure why or the changes cause you difficulty , you can contact HMRC for additional support.  The easiest way to do this is by using your Personal Tax Account.
