HMRC – Personal Tax Accounts

Pay as You Earn (PAYE) and your Personal Tax Account.

Her Majestys Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have around 41 million PAYE customers. For this group of people the tax they owe is deducted from their income by their employer.

From the end of May 2017 HMRC began to use real time information collected each month from employers;  along with any changes you make yourself using either your Personal Tax Account  or other means of contact with HMRC to determine your correct tax code (your tax code tells your employer how much tax you need to pay).

What are the benefits? – This means you are more likely to pay the right amount of tax on your income as you earn it. The personal tax account function provides individuals with visibility of how HMRC have calculated your tax code as the ability to make some amendments online.  By using this to monitor your code you will have an assurance your code is correct and help to avoid you either receiving unexpected tax bills or paying too much tax.

What do you need to do? – Most people have no action to take. Your pay and tax will continue as normal. However,if your circumstances change you will receive a tax code notice explaining the change and what to do next.

If HMRC make an adjustment to your tax code and you are unsure why or the changes cause you difficulty , you can contact HMRC for additional support.  The easiest way to do this is by using your Personal Tax Account.

Your online Personal Tax Account gives a personalised picture of your tax affairs, along with prompts, advice and support. Your account is a new way to view and manage your tax affairs in one secure place providing instant access to your information and the ability to check your details quickly and easily.
